A Family Day at Zuid-Kennemerland National Park

When the sun is shining, one of our favorite places to spend the day is Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Just a short drive from the city, this beautiful nature reserve offers something for every visitor—whether you’re looking for a peaceful walk, a scenic bike ride, or an engaging outdoor experience for the kids.

The park is home to a variety of landscapes, from rolling dunes and open fields to serene lakes and dense forests. Along the way, you might spot Scottish Highland cattle, wild horses, or even a fox if you're lucky. It’s a fantastic place to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and let the kids roam freely in nature.

An Adventure for Young Explorers

Magische Speurtocht

While the park itself is a joy to explore, what makes it extra special for kids are the marked adventure trails, Speurtochten. These short routes, about 1.5 km long, turn a simple walk into a fun-filled discovery tour with little tasks along the way.

For an extra fee, you can level up the experience by renting a backpack filled with tools and materials to complete hands-on nature assignments. There are three options to choose from: "Stijn Konijn", for the youngest kids, 3 to 5 years old, "Spinnetje Spikkel" - for kids from 4 to 6 years old and "Vosje Vos" for a bit older kids, 7 to 9 years old. During each quest kids get to identify animal tracks, feel different textures in nature, and solve little puzzles about the park’s ecosystem. It’s an easy way to keep them engaged while helping them appreciate the nature around them.

A Cozy Break at the Visitors’ Center

After an active walk, the Visitors’ Center café is the perfect place to relax. The café offers seasonal drinks and treats, making it an inviting spot throughout the year—hot chocolate in winter, fresh lemonade in summer, and something tasty to go with it.

One of the highlights is the spacious terrace, which overlooks a huge playground with climbing structures, a parkour course, and a water pump area. This setup makes it easy for parents to enjoy a quiet coffee while still keeping an eye on the kids as they burn off the last bit of energy.

A Place Worth Returning To

Zuid-Kennemerland National Park is one of those places that never gets old. With its ever-changing landscapes, engaging activities for kids, and a relaxing spot to unwind, it’s a destination that’s enjoyable in every season. Whether it's the first visit or the tenth, there’s always something new to discover — and that’s exactly what makes it worth coming back to again and again.
